Fewer legal visitors crossing into Arizona to shop

The migration crackdown has apparently led a number of legal visitors from Mexico to stay absent from Arizona.

Sum cross-border visits into Arizona in the months after Gov. Jan Brewer signed Senate Bill 1070 fell 17 percent contrasted with the same period in 2009, U.S. Customs and Border guard said.

The drop-off amounts to about 12,500 smaller amount people entering Arizona daily.

Legalized entries by land from Mexico fell less than 7 percent crossways the entire Southwestern border during that same time frame.

authority say the slump and increased wait times at ports of entry play a role in people staying away, although there is no way to calculate which factors are most important.

"This used to be like the Gaza Strip," Chavez said. "Business was so good that real estate was more expensive here than in business district Phoenix."
