Castro Concedes Cuba's Economic Model Doesn’t Work

Goldberg explains his response in his Atlantic article of September 8:

I asked Julia [Sweig] to understand this dramatic declaration for me. She said, "He wasn't rejecting the ideas of the rebellion. I took it to be an acknowledgment that under 'the Cuban model' the condition has much too big a role in the financial life of the country."

Julia sharp out that one effect of such a feeling might be to create space for his brother, Raul, who is now president, to enact the essential reforms in the face of what will certainly be push-back from orthodox communists within the Party and the government. Raul Castro is by now loosening the state's hold on the economy. He newly announced, in fact, that small businesses can now function and that overseas investors could now buy Cuban real estate.
