Sacramento-area advance broker Christopher Jared Warren was fixed trying to cross from Canada into the United States with four ounces of platinum and $70,000 concealed in his shoes.

You'd by no means know that, but, if you were to check with the California Department of Real Estate. Warren, whose con trial is ongoing, is still a qualified broker and has no corrective action on his record with the department, which promotes its online license database as a tool for consumers to make sure they're dealing with trustworthy professional.

This is not a remote case. The Sacramento Bee found dozens of real estate professional - people who have been emotional with real estate-related crime or sued by the state for fraud- related misdeeds, or who have pleaded guilty to such bad behavior - who are still approved and have no notations, flags or punitive sanction listed on their records with the Department of Real Estate.
