
The president of the Virginia separation of Long & Foster changed direction after a few semesters as a pre-med student at the University of Virginia.
"Previous to I got out of school, I understand I didn't want to be a doctor and they didn't need me in the hospital."
Nelms, armed with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959, was on an administration track at C&P Telephone Co. though that wasn't right, either. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1961.
He well-known into real estate, joining gainful brokerage Harrison & Bates in 1965 and staying long adequate to get his broker's license.
He and two friends in 1967 launch Bowers Nelms & Fonville, a tiny company that grew into the Richmond area's main real estate firm.
